What your BMI means

Your weight and your fertility, in plain words

  1. Underweight

    BMI Below 18.5

    For women
Too little body fat can pause ovulation, so periods may become irregular or stop.
    For men
Very low weight can lower sperm count.
    What helps
A dietitian can help you gain weight gently and safely.
  2. Healthy

    BMI 18.5 to 24.9

    For women
Ovulation is usually at its most regular, and pregnancy is at its safest.
    For men
Sperm count and quality tend to be at their best.
    What helps
Keep doing what you are doing: good food, movement and sleep.
  3. Overweight

    BMI 25 to 29.9

    For women
Ovulation can become less regular and it may take a little longer to conceive.
    For men
Sperm quality can start to dip.
    What helps
Losing even 5 percent of your weight can help.
  4. Obese

    BMI 30 and above

    For women
Hormones can be thrown off, IVF works less well and pregnancy carries more risk.
    For men
Higher weight is linked to lower sperm count and quality.
    What helps
Small, steady changes make a real difference, and our specialists can help.

  2. 19 to 30 BMI before IVFThe range many clinics prefer, because treatment works better and is safer.
  3. Both partners countA man's weight matters too: a higher BMI is linked to lower sperm count and quality.

Questions

BMI and fertility, answered

Ask our specialists
What is a healthy BMI for getting pregnant?

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range, or 18.5 to 22.9 if you use the South Asian ranges. In this range ovulation is usually regular, IVF tends to work best and pregnancy is safest.

Why are the South Asian ranges lower?

People of South Asian origin tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, so health risks start at a lower number. That is why Indian guidelines count a BMI of 23 as overweight and 25 as obese. The calculator switches these on for visitors in South Asia, and you can change it.

Does BMI affect IVF success?

Yes. Both a very low and a high BMI are linked to fewer eggs, lower pregnancy rates and more risk in pregnancy. That is why many clinics prefer a BMI between 19 and 30 before starting treatment.

Does a man's BMI matter?

It does. A higher BMI in men is linked to lower sperm count and quality, and changes in hormones. Checking both partners together gives the fuller picture.

How much weight should I lose before trying?

Often less than people think. Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can bring back regular ovulation, especially with PCOS. Slow and steady is best, and our specialists can help you plan it.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

Not always. It does not tell muscle from fat, so it can mislead for very muscular people, and it is not used in pregnancy. Your doctor may also look at your waist and your health as a whole.

Is my information stored anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your own browser. Your height and weight are never sent to us, never saved and never added to the page address.
