hCG week by week
Normal hCG levels by week of pregnancy
Each bar shows where most results fall that week. The range is wide on purpose: healthy pregnancies start at very different levels.

It climbs fast at first
In the early weeks it often doubles every 2 to 3 days.

It peaks at 8 to 11 weeks
Then it eases down and settles for the rest of the pregnancy.

Then a scan says more
Once the level is in the low thousands, a scan can usually see the pregnancy, and doctors go by the scan.

One number or two
One test says yes or no. Two tests show the way it is going.
Doctors rarely judge a pregnancy on one number. They look at how much it rises over 2 days.
One test
- Under 5Not pregnant, or too early to show
- 5 to 24Unclear. Test again in 2 days
- 25 or moreA pregnancy
Two tests, 2 days apart
- Under 1,200Often doubles every 2 to 3 days
- 1,200 to 6,000Often doubles every 3 to 4 days
- Over 6,000Often takes 4 days or more to double
The slowest usual rise in 48 hours is about 49% from a level under 1,500, 40% from 1,500 to 3,000 and 33% above that (Barnhart and colleagues, 2016).
After IVF
Your beta test after an embryo transfer
The wait is hard. Here is what to know before the day comes.

Your clinic sets the day
The blood test is usually 9 to 14 days after the transfer. Keep taking your medicines until they say otherwise.

Home tests can mislead
The hCG trigger injection can stay in your body for 10 to 14 days and show a positive that is not a pregnancy.

The second test matters most
Most clinics repeat the test 2 days later. A good rise means more than a high first number.

Higher can mean twins
Two embryos make more hCG, but only a scan can tell you how many.

Questions
What people ask about hCG levels
Whatever the number says, you do not have to read it alone.
Our specialists are happy to go through your results with you, without any pressure.
What is hCG?
Human chorionic gonadotropin is the pregnancy hormone. It is made by the cells that will become the placenta, starting soon after the embryo implants, about 6 to 12 days after ovulation. Blood and urine pregnancy tests both look for it.
What is a normal hCG level at 4 weeks?
Anywhere from about 5 to 426 mIU/mL, counted from the first day of your last period. The range is wide, which is why the rise over 2 days tells more than a single number.
How fast should hCG double?
In early pregnancy it often doubles every 2 to 3 days while it is under about 1,200. Doctors look for a rise of at least 33 to 49% in 48 hours, depending on the starting level. It slows down as the level climbs.
Can a low hCG level still be a healthy pregnancy?
Yes. Dates are often a few days out, and healthy pregnancies start at very different levels. A good rise and a scan at the right time are what count.
What does a high hCG level mean?
Often just that you are a little further along than you thought. It can also mean twins. Rarely it points to other conditions, which a scan will check.
What if my hCG is falling?
A falling level usually means the pregnancy is not continuing. Please call your doctor or clinic, who will check you and support you. It is not your fault, and you are not alone.
When is the beta test after IVF?
Usually 9 to 14 days after the embryo transfer. Your clinic will give you the day and tell you what numbers they look for.
Can I use a home test result here?
No. Home tests only say yes or no. This checker needs the number from a blood test, in mIU/mL, which is the same as IU/L.

Please read: a guide, not a diagnosis
- This checker gives general information, not a diagnosis. It compares your numbers with published ranges and the usual rise in early pregnancy.
- Ranges are wide and dates are often a few days out. One number alone cannot say whether a pregnancy is healthy; the rise and a scan tell much more.
- Labs can differ a little. Always go by what your own doctor or clinic tells you about your results.
- If you have pain, heavy bleeding or feel faint, do not wait for a test. Get medical help straight away.
