The four phases

What your body is doing, week by week

Your hormones follow the same pattern every cycle. Knowing where you are explains a lot about how you feel.

  1. You are here

    Days 1 to 5

    Period A fresh start

    In your body
The lining of the womb is shed, and a new cycle begins.
    You may feel
Energy can dip, and cramps are common in the first days.
    Try this
Warmth, rest and gentle movement help. Iron rich food makes up for what you lose.
  2. You are here

    Days 6 to 13

    Follicular Energy builds up

    In your body
Oestrogen climbs as an egg ripens in the ovary.
    You may feel
Many people feel brighter, more social and full of energy.
    Try this
A good time for harder workouts and new plans.
  3. You are here

    Days 14 to 16

    Ovulation Your most fertile days

    In your body
An egg is released and lives for about a day.
    You may feel
Some notice a twinge low on one side, or clear, stretchy discharge.
    Try this
Trying for a baby? These are your best days. Not trying? Be most careful now.
  4. You are here

    Days 17 to 28

    Luteal Winding down

    In your body
Progesterone rises to ready the lining for a pregnancy.
    You may feel
In the last days you may feel bloated, tired or low.
    Try this
Be gentle with yourself: sleep, less salt and caffeine, and a walk all ease premenstrual symptoms.

Is my cycle normal?

Every body is different. These are the usual ranges.

From the international guidance doctors use (FIGO). Outside a range is not a diagnosis, just a good reason to talk to someone.

  • Cycle length

From the first day of one period to the first day of the next.

  • How much it varies

The gap between your shortest and your longest cycle.

When to see a doctor

Your period is telling you something. It is worth listening.

  1. No period for three months

And you know you are not pregnant.

  2. Cycles under 24 or over 38 days

Or a pattern that suddenly changes.

  3. Periods lasting more than 8 days

Or bleeding between periods or after sex.

  4. Very heavy bleeding

Changing protection every hour or two, or clots bigger than a coin.

  5. Pain that stops your day

Pain killers do not help, or it is getting worse.

  6. Trying for a baby

For a year without success, or six months if you are 35 or over.

Questions

What people ask about their periods

What is a normal cycle length?

Anything from 24 to 38 days is usual for adults, counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Only a small share of people have exactly 28 days.

How does the tracker predict my next period?

It adds your cycle length to the day your last period started. You can set the cycle length yourself; once you add an earlier period, it fills in the average of your last six cycles for you, and you can still change it.

How many periods should I log?

Start with your last one. Add earlier periods with "Add an earlier period" under the calendar: two give a first cycle length, and three to six give a much better average and show how much your cycle varies.

Is it normal for my cycle to change?

A few days either way is normal. Stress, illness, travel, weight change and some medicines can all shift a period. A difference of more than 9 days between your shortest and longest cycle is worth mentioning to a doctor.

Can I use it to avoid pregnancy?

No. The fertile days are estimates from past cycles and ovulation can move, so this is not a method of contraception.

Can I use it to get pregnant?

Yes, as a guide: the fertile window shows the days sex is most likely to lead to pregnancy. An ovulation test can confirm the day.

Where are my periods saved?

Only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us. Use Forget all to clear them, and print the summary if you want to take it to your doctor.

When should I see a doctor about my periods?

If your cycles are shorter than 24 or longer than 38 days, if a period lasts more than 8 days, if bleeding is very heavy or painful, or if you have had no period for three months.

Your cycle is yours to understand. We are here whenever you have a question.
